NameCharonia lampas sauliae - RARE DEEPWATER QLD GIANT , Reeve, 1844
Size230 mm, w/o
LocalityAustralia
NoteUnbeknownst to even Ranellidae specialists, during the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls, a few rare examples of an extremely large, white Charonia were obtained, which were obviously different to all southern forms of C. lampas rubicunda, and which most likely represented C. l. sauliae, better known from the waters of Japan. An established faunal link exists between southern Japan and the waters of northern Queensland, (extending into the Coral Sea), as evidenced by the presence of the trio of famous ‘classic’ Japanese Cypraeidae species found at the latter locality, (langfordi, hirasei and teramachii). The current specimen is by far the LARGEST I have ever seen of this Queensland form of sauliae. This incredible GIANT remains as it was when collected. I have never removed its external encrustations, as I always thought a Ranellidae specialist may find it interesting to learn something of the habitat of this rare species. Unavailable now for almost forty years, and obtainable only from choice old collections which managed to secure a specimen in the 1980s, this represents an opportunity for an advanced Ranellidae specialist to acquire what may well be the largest example of this elusive, little-known Queensland species. Size: c.230 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Swain Reefs, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-80 m; dredged; 1982. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
