Item | # 0002582403 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Charonia lampas rubicunda powelli - OUTSTANDING S AUST. FORM , Cotton, 1957 |
Size | 150.5 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A magnificent large specimen of a beautiful South Australian form. An incredible melange of atypically rich colours: ultra-dark chestnut, tan and caramel, with beautiful background hues of blue and lavender, and pure, porcellaneous white apertural interior, with rich caramel accents to outer apertural lip. Exemplary quality for this typically rough species. Originally described as a full species by Cotton, (who rightly recognised its difference to New South Wales specimens, exhibiting finer, broader shells), all Australian lampas are now classified as rubicunda, although, given a decided morphological difference between intertidal NSW specimens and those occurring throughout the southern coast, I think it useful to retain the distinction of ‘powelli’ as a form or varietal name. Size: 150.5 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Off Western coast of Wedge Island, Gambier Islands, Spencer Gulf, South Australia, Australia; upon reef substrate, amongst sand rubble; 50-70 m; craypot; 2000. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
