NameComitas cf ensyuensis - EXTREME DEEP-WATER; RARE , Shikama & Hayashi, 1977
Size83.9 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteFrom all the material I received from the northern Western Australian trawling operations during the years of availability, (and thereafter), this is the ONLY specimen I have ever handled of this singular species. Most probably ensyuensis, as described by Shikama & Hayashi, understandably present in northern Western Australian waters upon account of the ocean currents which create a well known faunal link between the eastern Japanese and Western Australian provinces. Similar shells, (from other localities), are routinely referred to as ‘kaderlyi’, yet my understanding of true kaderlyi is a shell which exhibits: 1) more rounded whorls; 2) a smoother external surface, (lacking the well-developed, fine spiral sculpture of ensyuensis); 3) less prominent and angulate peripheral nodes; and 4) (most tellingly of all), bichromaticism, being divided into broad spiral bands of brown and white, (white at the whorl periphery, flanked by brown). Subtle straw and ivory. Well-developed, fine spiral sculpture. Loss at apex, but otherwise exemplary for a relatively fine, large, extreme deep-water, trawled shell. I leave it to the Turridae specialist to determine its precise taxonomic standing. A striking and beautiful study piece for the advanced Turridae specialist. Size: 83.9 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Timor Sea, off Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 300-400 m; trawled; 2006. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
