Item | # 0002558298 | Family | Muricidae | Name | Thaisella ambustulatus - EAST AUSTRALIAN ENDEMIC , Hedley, 1912 |
Size | 26.9 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An exceptional, 'BEST of the best' quality specimen of this extremely difficult to obtain endemic eastern Australian species. Little known outside of Australia, and undoubtedly lacking in the majority of the world’s specialist Muricidae collections, especially at such high quality. The current specimen is of the rarer New South Wales form, from the southern range limit of the species. The operculum of this species, (unlike the overwhelming majority of gastropods, and extremely rare for a member of the Rapaninae), is not monochromatic, but exhibits dark red radial markings, as seen in certain Pteropurpura species. Very seldom offered upon the world market. Definitely for the advanced Muricidae specialist. Size: 26.9 mm (length). Grading: Gem; w/o. Data: Off Woody Head, New South Wales, Australia; upon reef substrate, at extreme low tide; 1984. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
