Note | An outstanding specimen of the rare Kangaroo Island form of this extreme deep-water, endemic southern Australian species. Exceptional quality for this usually rough species, with expansive, flaring varices in an exemplary state of preservation. Ultra-clean, with none of the typical encrustation, erosion, nor substrate discoloration which detract from the majority of specimens. Balanced proportions. Retention of original operculum. Such specimens were collected during extreme deep-water trawling operations carried out off Kangaroo Island in the early 1990s and have never been available since, nor will they become available again in the future. Although several examples were obtained, very few were of the quality of the curent specimen. Size: 53.9 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Off South coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 600-1,000 m; trawled; 1992. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
