| Note | This outstanding LIVE-COLLECTED specimen is the BEST I have ever handled of this ultra-rare, extreme deep-water, endemic Western Australian species. In the early 1980s extreme deep-water trawling was undertaken off Bunbury, which produced several new and rare species, one of the most outstanding of which was Ericusa naniforma. (Deep-water trawling off Rottnest Island at a similar time also produced specimens.) Once these operations ceased, the species was never seen again until ROV collecting was carried out in shallower water, (around 80-100 m), in the 2010s. The ROV-collected examples were however, dead-collected in poor condition, which may mean they were transferred to shallower water via ocean currents, and that the habitat of the species remains in extremely deep water, (400 m+). With such extreme deep-water trawling no longer undertaken, and unlikely to resume, fresh live-collected specimens will never again be obtained. Hypermature at this diminutive size, with markedly thickened outer apertural lip, great solidity, and incredible weight to size ratio. Exceptional quality, with PERFECT outer apertural lip and siphonal canal. The current specimen bears an uncanny resemblance to that illustrated as figs.12-13 in the original description, (Novapex; 14:1; 1-4; 10 March 2013). Now obtainable only when released from Australia’s premiere collections. An exceedingly rare opportunity for an advanced Volutidae specialist to acquire one of the best of the original trawled examples of this supreme rarity. Size: 65 mm (length). Grading: Gem.
