Item | # 0002557221 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila venusta roseopunctata - ULTRA-BIG; RICH PINK , Melvill, 1888 |
Size | 75.2 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This magnificent specimen would be better described as a ‘roseoimmaculata with spots’, as a mere 12 sporadic caramel-tan maculae decorate its dorsum, technically rendering it a roseopunctata, yet the entire dorsum is predominantly uniform, radiant, exceedingly rich pink, the luminous quality of which can only be fully appreciated with the shell ‘in the hand’. Indeed, the specimen served to illustrate an intermediate between the two forms in the JES Collection. Rich orange accents to pinkish cream ventrum. One restricted area of typical ‘creases’ to columella side of dorsum, (image available upon request), seen in virtually every pink venusta, but otherwise exemplary. Ultra-large size. A most impressive and supremely beautiful specimen for the Zoila specialist. Size: 75.2 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Cape le Grand, Esperance, Western Australia, Australia; upon granite reef substrate, upon orange sponge; 25 m; dived; 2002. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
