Size | 100.4 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Amongst Australian Umbilia collectors there has, for many years, been much speculation concerning a southerly population of hesitata purported to exist off Cape Schanck, the southernmost point of the Mornington Peninsula, bridging the geographic gap between Lakes Entrance and Tasmania, the two known strongholds of the species. Never, however, in my decades of involvement with Australian shells, had I encountered any documented example from this region, until my acquisition of the current specimen. This highly unusual and beautiful specimen was formerly in the renowned collection of Lance Moore of Sydney. Moore was an important figure in mid twentieth century Australian shell collecting, and a pioneer dealer, handling many rare early examples of trawled and dived shells, including the current specimen. As Moore was an assidious record keeper, in addition to being one of the most connected shell dealers of his time, I have no reason to doubt the information stated upon his original 1970s label, (accompanying the specimen), which renders the current specimen, (to my knowledge), the ONLY known documented Mornington Peninsula example. The unusual characteristics of the specimen lend credence to this assertion, being features I have not observed in any Lakes Entrance example: atypically depressed, elongate shape; glassy yellow additional accretion of shell material to both terminals, (especially anterior); and with outer edge of siphonal canal markedly recurved. Unusual and beautiful expansive ‘cloud’ dorsal pattern. A couple of intrepid contemporary Melbourne divers have searched this area, but have so far not found any specimens, and it is probable that, as at Lakes Entrance, the population inhabits only deep water, beyond a diveable depth, and, as trawling is no longer undertaken in this region, no fresh specimens will be available in future. A unique opportunity for an Umbilia specialist to acquire an example from this extremely rare locality, and a piece of shell collecting history. Size: 100.4 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Off Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia; upon sand/mud substrate; 1977. Provenance: 1) Lance Moore private collection, Sydney; 2) JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
