NameConus anemone peronianus - RARE MAGNFICIENT GIANT , Lamarck, 1810
Size90.4 mm, w/o
LocalityAustralia
NoteOver many auctions I have sold several spectacular giant specimens of this endemic South Australian subspecies from the JES Collection, assembled over many years during the now finished years of availability, and with each example sold, the possibility of my offering further specimens diminishes, along with the opportunity for collectors to acquire this remarkable form. The current specimen is one of the LARGEST giants of the JES Collection, (and one of the largest I have ever seen - just exceeding the 90 mm threshold), of the already rare peach-pink colour form. Possessing an incredibly fine shell for such a large species, and coming from an extremely rough habitat, such giants always exhibit lines and erosion, yet in the current specimen, these are at a minimum, especially given its exceedingly advanced size and age. Fully mature, completely natural outer apertural lip. Now only obtainable from the choicest old collections, and almost never at this monumental size, in this rare colour form. Definitely for the Conidae specialist, or collector of giant sized shells. Size: 90.4 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Thorny Passage, Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon coarse white sand substrate, under limestone slab; 28 m; dived; 1994. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
