Item | # 0002557195 | Family | Buccinidae | Name | Godfreyna torri - OUTSTANDING; THE BEST , Verco, 1909 |
Size | 69.5 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Unquestionably one of the FINEST known specimens of this supremely beautiful and greatly prized endemic southern Australian species. At virtually 70 mm, the current specimen is an enormous FEMALE example of the Cape le Grand form - the most exquisite and impressive incarnation of the species. Exceedingly rare, live-collected PERFECTION. Retention of original operculum. Virtually never offered at this size and quality, as very few were collected during the years of availability, and such specimens are almost never released from Australian collections. The only comparable specimen of which I am aware of having been offered upon the world market in recent years was the partner to the current specimen from my private collection, which I sold in a previous shellauction around a year ago. Rarely do I urge acquisition, but, should one wish to acquire what is without doubt one of the BEST torri ever collected, then this is the specimen to purchase. A true ‘museum piece’ of conchology, now to be passed to another connoisseur of the world’s very finest seashells. Size: 69.5 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off Cape le Grand, Esperance, Western Australia, Australia; upon coarse white sand/gravel substrate; 27 m; 1997. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
