| Note | One of the most OUTSTANDING Stansbury ‘black’ thersites of the entire JES Collection. I have sold the majority of my holdings of Stansbury ‘blacks’ over many previous shellauctions, but this specimen has been retained until now for my enjoyment upon account of its exceptional nature - virtually pure black, with the most beautiful rosselli-like stripe of honey gold centrally traversing the dorsum. Hypermature, with incredible marginal and ventral callosity, the specimen is one of the heaviest Stansbury thersites for its size I have ever seen. With its incredible solidity and weight to size ratio; mantle line of gold; and elegant form, with greatly attenuated terminals, the specimen really feels like an enormous ‘fat’ rosselli ‘in the hand’. As the Zoila specialist familiar with the Stansbury ‘black’ form will know, it is almost an impossibility to find an example of this form which does not, to some extent, exhibit sand inclusions or abrasion, and other issues. The current specimen, by contrast, is an exceedingly rare exception to this rule. Impeccably curated since its collection, its incredibly dark colour is fully stable, if maintained under careful curation. Its ultra-black, ultra-glossy external surface reflects every nuance of ambient light, therefore, note that all areas of lighter colour in the above images are but light reflection. Now obtainable only from choice old collections. Rarely do I urge acquisition, but, should one seek a truly unique, out of the ordinary, ‘top of the line’ Stansbury ‘black’, then this is the shell to purchase. Size: 68.3 mm (length). Grading: Gem.
