Note | Has such a specimen ever been seen before? Another of the greatest treasures of the JES Collection - Australia’s most beautiful and coveted bivalve, rendered all the rarer and more beautiful via its incredible colour - uniform GOLDEN ORANGE. The specimen comes from a geographically restricted locality within the Port Lincoln region of South Australia, famous for producing certain wholly substrate-influenced shells, (the most famed of which is the ultra-rare Lyria kimberi, an example of which I sold in the previous shellauction). This very small area is no longer accessible to divers, with no fresh specimens being available in future - an irrelevant point, given that the current specimen is probably unique. I have seen no other example in which the substrate-influence is so universal as to render the entire shell a glowing golden orange, creating the appearance of a true ‘golden’ form in pigmented shell material. A standout ‘museum piece’ of conchology, definitely for the bivalve specialist, or admirer of exquiste, ‘wow factor’ seashells. Size: 58 mm (longest dimension). Grading: F++++. Data: Geographically restricted area of Boston Bay, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 15 m; dived; 1990. Provenance: JES private collection, Melbourne/London. |
