Item | # 0002557118 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Cypraea histrio - OUTSTANDING; KENYAN FORM , Gmelin, 1791 |
Size | 63.9 mm |
Locality | Kenya |
Note | During the availability of the 1980s I acquired several magnificent histrio from Kenya - the most beautiful of all eastern African forms. Over the decades these have all been sold, with the exception of the current specimen, which I retained in the JES Collection as the standout of all those obtained. Although Madagascan specimens, and, to some extent, examples from Mozambique, (neither of which rival the Kenyan form for beauty), remain relatively available, fresh specimens of the Kenyan form have become much more difficult to obtain, coming now principally from old collections. Exquiste, net-like pattern, formed with exceptional clarity and regularity. Clearly delineated straight mantle line. Hypermature, with extreme marginal and ventral callosity, creating incredible weight to size ratio. PERFECTION. In a different league to the majority of specimens offered. For the Cypraeidae specialist whose collection yet lacks a BEST of the best Kenyan example. Size: 63.9 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Malindi Bay, Malindi, Kenya; upon reef substrate, under coral slab; 4-6 m; dived; 1984. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
