Size | 46.2 mm, w/o |
Locality | Galapagos Islands |
Note | This truly outstanding specimen of the rarest GALAPAGOS form was collected in 1968, when such spectacular specimens were still available, and is of the finest possible quality for such a large example. Exceptionally well-curated over the decades, with lustrous, porcelain-like finish to apertural interior, and with the colour of the numerous raised apertural ridges still deep red-orange, and the single ridge upon the columella ultra-dark purplish chocolate. Colours fully stable after half a century of careful curation. PERFECT outer apertural lip. Hypermature: ultra-solid and heavy, with marked weight to size ratio. Retention of original operculum. Its locality is now ultra-protected as the Galapagos Marine Reserve, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and no fresh specimens will be available in future, (if indeed such ultra-large and spectacular examples still exist on the islands). Now obtainable only from choice old collections. Size: 46.2 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Off Puerto Villamil, Isla Isabela, Galapagos Islands; upon reef substrate at low tide; 1968. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
