Item | # 0002545458 | Family | Fasciolariidae | Name | Australaria australasia - ULTRA-RARE ‘ALBINO’ , Perry, 1811 |
Size | 163.2 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | The ONLY ‘ALBINO’ specimen I have ever seen of the deep-water New South Wales form of this endemic eastern Australian species. Completely pigmentless, pure white shell, and striking, porcellaneous white apertural interior. LIVE-COLLECTED, and in exceptional condition for this usually very rough deep-water trawled form. I conjecture that, if not UNIQUE, then the rate at which pure white specimens occur in relation to typical examples must be exceedingly low, as this is the only albino specimen I have encountered in decades of involvement with Australian shells. Undoubtedly lacking in the most advanced Fasciolariidae collections. Size: 163.2 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Off Eden, South Coast Region, New South Wales, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 100-250 m; trawled; 1982. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
