Note | The LARGEST and BEST specimen of the JES Collection of this singular endemic, deep-water Queensland species. Exemplary state of preservation for a deep-water, trawled shell, with peripheral spines; elongate siphonal canal; ‘shield’; and apex, all in exceptional condition. Bulbous protoconch intact. As close to perfection as is possible for the species. The columellar ‘shield’ is atypically well-developed, extending a full centimetre from the aperture, and, being of rare PERFECTION, creates a dramatic sculptural effect. The shield also exhibits thick, resplendent porcellaneous white gloss. A product of the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls, and now obtainable only from choice old collections, and almost never like this. Most collectors will not realise how difficult it is to obtain an armigera of this size and quality. For the connoisseur of exquisite seashells. Size: 88 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Swain Reefs, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 40-80 m; dredged; 1984. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
