Item | # 0002544645 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila friendi thersites - ULTRA-DARK; OUTSTANDING , Gaskoin, 1849 |
Size | 64.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An absolutely outstanding example of the Stansbury ‘black’ form, of the finest possible quality, and exhibiting a truly beautiful dorsal pattern of the highest aesthetic merit, with large, coalescent maculae delineating a well-formed mantle line. As the Zoila specialist familiar with the Stansbury ‘black’ form will know, it is almost an impossibility to find an example of this form which does not, to some extent, exhibit sand inclusions or abrasion, and other issues. The current specimen is an exceedingly rare exception to this rule. Ultra-dark, virtually black margins. Impeccably curated since its collection, its incredibly dark colour is fully stable if careful curation is maintained. Now obtainable only from choice old collections. A Stansbury ‘black’ for the connoisseur. Size: 64.3 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off Stansbury, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon limestone reef substrate, amongst seaweed and sponges; 6 m; dived; 1987. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
