FamilyCypraeidae
NameNotocypraea declivis dennyorum - OUTSTANDING; ULTRA-DARK , Lorenz & Morrison, 2013
Size24.3 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteLive-collected only three months ago, the current outstanding specimen is one of the DARKEST and BEST dennyorum to be offered upon the world market thus far. Described less than a decade ago, this magnificent Tasmanian subspecies is found by only a couple of dedicated, expert divers, who have discovered the localities for obtaining specimens. The current specimen is from the eastern MAINLAND population, examples of which are appreciably LARGER than those from Bruny Island, the other locality at which specimens have been collected. Being ultra-fresh-collected, it allows us to perceive the full expression of colour in the species, although it should be noted that the current specimen is an atypically richly coloured individual. The specimen presents a truly incredible array of colours: chocolate dorsum, densely mottled with even darker chocolate maculae; spectacular rich yellow-orange margins, decorated with ultra-dark chocolate maculae; and a peach-apricot ventrum, with a nebulous tinge of lavender. Although all Notocypraea exhibit lines across the dorsum as a result of their ultra-fine shell during development, in the current specimen such lines are virtually non-existent, and wholly negligible. Lacking in the overwhelming majority the world’s Cypraeidae collections, especially in its ultra-large mainland incarnation, and in such high quality and ultra-dark colour. A BEST of the best dennyorum for the Cypraeidae connoisseur. Size: 24.3 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Off mouth of River Derwent, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia; upon side of dolerite boulder, upon kelp-covered reef substrate; 5-7 m; 10 December 2020. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
