Size | 57.8 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A superb specimen of a very rare, deep-water, pale, patternless colour form, of extremely close kinship to thersites contraria from the Great Australian Bight. In his book ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’, Peter Clarkson notes: ‘Some of these diver-collected shells are conchologically indistinguishable from Great Australian Bight trawled specimens.’ For a virtually identical specimen see ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’, p.104; pl.89; fig.d. Beautiful pale palette: alternating bands of white and pale cinnamon, with pale yellow marginal maculae. In the absence of almost all of the dedicated deep-diving Zoila collectors of yesteryear, it is extremely unlikely that this rare, deep-water colour form will ever be collected again. A rare opportunity for the highly advanced Zoila specialist. Size: 57.8 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Off Anthony’s Lump, Esperance, Western Australia, Australia; upon coarse white sand/gravel substrate; 45 m; 1997. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
