Size | 34.5 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This is the ONLY specimen of this extremely rare, and virtually never offered species from the JES Collection. I was extremely fortunate to obtain the specimen from a dredging operation undertaken at a remote and rare locality in the mid 1980s, and the species will most likely never be collected from this locality again. Originally discovered in Asian waters, its range was subsequently found to extend to the far northern region of Australia. For a comprehensive discussion of this rare species, see the original description: A new Olivid (Gastropoda: Olividae) from the South China Sea; Bulletin of Malacology, Taiwan, ROC; 21: 29-32. Exceedingly fine, lightweight, translucent, pure white shell. Completely natural outer apertural lip with typical minor fraying, (much preferable to artificial smoothing), but otherwise perfection. (For such an incredibly delicate shell to survive the dredging process is extremely rare in itself.) Undoubtedly lacking in the majority of even the most advanced Olivoidea collections, and definitely for the Olivoidea / Ancillariidae specialist. Size: 34.5 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Gulf of Carpentaria, off Mornington Island, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 30-60 m; dredged; 1986. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
