Size | 224 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This monumental, dinner-plate-sized GIANT is the LARGEST specimen of the Western Australian form I have ever seen. I sold my giant South Australian specimens in recent auctions, but this is the ONLY Western Australian giant of the JES Collection. The Western Australian form exhibits exterior colours of more reddish earth tones, (as opposed to the green tones of South Australian examples), which, in the current specimen, are arranged in a particularly attractive design of dashes and streaks. Opalescent apertural interior. Invariably with erosion at this enormous, old age size. Hypermature, with marked weight to size ratio, and high, well-developed peripheral tubercules. Rugged undulating ridges of late stage growth, like the bark of an ancient gnarlèd oak. Now obtainable at this size only from old collections. Definitely for the Haliotidae specialist, or collector of giant sized shells. Size: 224 mm (longest dimension). Grading: F+++. Data: Torbay, Albany, South Coast Region, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 6 m; dived; 1999. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
