FamilyCassidae
NameSemicassis angasi denisi - VERY RARE ‘DENISI’ FORM , Salmon, 1948
Size32.3 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteIn his 1948 catalogue of Cassidae, Salmon described denisi as a full species, although it is now often considered a synonym of angasi. Yet, when one encounters ‘THE REAL THING’, and experiences for oneself the incredibly fine, lightweight, pure white and translucent shell of ‘denisi’, it is easy to understand why Salmon thought it worthy of separation from all other related forms. This is a shell which can only be fully appreciated ‘in the hand’, as, in its diminutive, fully mature state, it is so lightweight as to weigh virtually nothing in the hand, whilst its shining, pure white colour and translucent shell, in conjunction with its extraordinarily fine, highly cancellate exterior surface sculpture, render it like no other cassid. When held to the light, one can readily observe the entire interior structure of the shell, along with the most exquisite cancellate sculpture. Unlike the dead-collected, perforated holotype, (MNHN-IM-2000-4151), the current specimen is a live-collected jewel, with nothing but the tiniest loss at the siphonal canal - quite amazing, given that this impossibly delicate shell was collected via trawling. The BEST specimen of this rare form I have ever seen, and the ONLY specimen of the JES Collection. A rare opportunity for an advanced Cassidae specialist to acquire an exceptional example of this very little known form. Size: 32.3 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Capricorn Channel, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-80 m; trawled; 1984. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
