Note | We are working our way through my extensive holdings of Zoila from the private collection of Peter Clarkson, (author of ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’), with this magnificent, ultra-large specimen of the Duke of Orleans Bay form. The original hand-written Clarkson label accompanies the specimen. Exceptional colours throughout. Particularly beautiful terminals: ultra-dark chestnut exteriors, contrasting beautifully with pure white interiors. Spire covered in thick deposition of dusky cinnamon nacre. Spectacular rich cream and ivory margins, decorated with burnt ochre and chocolate maculae. An incredibly coloured vercoi, with illustrious provenance, for the Zoila connoisseur. Size: 85.9 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off East of Duke of Orleans Bay, South Coast Region, Western Australia, Australia; upon limestone reef substrate, upon plateau, upon 1.5 m tall green sponge, (Spirastrella papillosa), amongst sponges; 9 m; dived; 18 May 2005. Provenance: 1. Peter Clarkson private collection, Port Lincoln; 2. JES private collection, Melbourne/London. |
