Item | # 0002542155 | Family | Muricidae | Name | Chicoreus florifer - OUTSTANDING , Reeve, 1846 |
Size | 69.7 mm, w/o |
Locality | U.S.A. |
Note | The BEST florifer of the JES Collection, and, at virtually 70 mm, one of the largest and best specimens I have ever seen of the highly frondose ‘dilectus’ form. The specimen was diver-collected, and is thus in an exceptional state of preservation, suffering none of the typical loss seen in trawled examples. Even at the time of collection, during the ‘old days’ of Florida availability, specimens of this size and quality were rare in comparison with smaller, typically shorter-spined examples. Tones of sand, beige and ivory, with rich reddish pink apex and early whorls. Extremely difficult to obtain at this size and quality now, coming only from choice old collections. A dream florifer for the Muricidae specialist. Size: 69.7 mm (length). Grading: Gem; w/o. Data: Off Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, USA; upon reef substrate, under coral slab; 18 m; dived; 1980. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
