Item | # 0002542039 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Cypraea tigris - ANCIENT YELLOW QLD TIGER , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 68.6 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An outstanding example of one of the rare and beautiful ‘yellow’ specimens form the very ‘old days’ of Queensland availability. Collected upon the Great Barrier Reef in 1962, the shell exhibits an incredibly dense deposition of shell material throughout, creating a ‘rostrate’ feel and appearance, and resulting in phenomenal weight to size ratio. This form has not been freshly available since the 1970s, and is very seldom offered upon the world market today, (less so than similar examples from just across the waters in New Caledonia). Well-curated throughout the decades, retaining a remarkably fresh appearance. A couple of typical minor ‘stress’ lines, seen in all exceptionally densely glossed cowries, but otherwise perfection. Definitely for the Cypraeidae specialist whose collection yet lacks a ‘yellow’ Queensland tiger. Size: 68.6 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Lamont Reef, Bunker Group, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon reef substrate, under slab at extreme low tide; 1962. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
