Note | We are working our way through my extensive holdings of magnificent Zoila from the private collection of Peter Clarkson, (author of ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’), with this ultra-large and outstanding specimen - one of the BEST bataviensis of the Clarkson and JES collections. The original, hand-written Clarkson label accompanies the specimen. The specimen is exceptional in every respect: size; maturity; form; colour; and pattern. Exceedingly beautiful dorsal pattern of mottled, coalescent caramel maculae, in a design of the highest aesthetic merit. Markedly crenulated margins in burnt orange. Ultra-dark ventrum. Supreme symmetry of form. Hypermature: ultra-solid and heavy, with incredible weight to size ratio. A favourite bataviensis of the Clarkson and JES collections, now to be passed to another Zoila connoisseur. Size: 53 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off 16 km South of Kalbarri, Western Australia, Australia; upon silty, sand-covered sandstone reef substrate, upon 0.5 m tall reef ridge, amongst sponges; 30 m; dived; 30 June 2005. Provenance: 1. Peter Clarkson private collection, Port Lincoln; 2. JES private collection, Melbourne/London. |
