Item | # 0002542030 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Lyria kimberi - RARE; SELDOM OFFFERED , Cotton, 1932 |
Size | 31.6 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Described by Cotton as a full species, this exceedingly rare form is now generally considered to be a highly localised, wholly substrate-influenced variant of L. mitraeformis. The name kimberi remains in use however, amongst Australian Volutidae collectors, to readily reference this singular form, of which few specimens are known. I am unaware of any other kimberi having been offered upon the world market in recent years. (For a discussion of this rare form see ‘The Living Volutes’, p.21.) Unlike the dead-collected holotype, (figured in ‘The Living Volutes’), the current specimen is LIVE-COLLECTED, with retention of original operculum. A unique opportunity for a specialist to acquire a form undoubtedly lacking in even the most advanced Volutidae collections. Size: 31.6 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Boston Bay, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 15 m; dived; 1999. Provenance: JES private collection, Melbourne/London. |
