Note | Another of the greatest treasures of the JES Collection: an almost unbelievable WHITE GIANT triformis of exceptional quality. The existence of such a shell will come as a surprise, even to many advanced Muricidae specialists. Cream specimens occur quite frequently in standard form and size, and a few cream-ivory giants are also known, but this pure white colour form is exceedingly rare in any size. Predominantly pure white, with a tinge of peach to the body whorl between the varices. Its white colour; extremely fine nature; and translucent varices, lend the specimen an ethereal quality. Exceptional state of preservation for such advanced size and age. Usually inhabiting a rock reef substrate, under ledges and slabs, most specimens incur severe damage to the varices, especially at such giant size. The current specimen, by contrast, was collected from amongst a bed of Pinna shells, which accounts for the exceptional level of preservation of its delicate varices. The South Australian form is more delicate than that of Victoria or Tasmania, and is, in general, the most beautiful incarnation of the species, yet these ultra-giants, collected many years ago from the famous Pinna beds of Thorny Passage, are the rarest and most beautiful of all triformis. It took many years to assemble my collection of these ultra-giants, and, with fresh specimens no longer available, once all are sold, it is unlikely I will ever be able to offer such giants again. Collected twenty years ago, and re-cleaned by myself for this auction, removing the very last traces of encrustation, the specimen appears as fresh as the day it was collected. I am unaware of any white giant from the Pinna beds having been offered upon the world market in the last decade or more. A true ‘museum piece’ of conchology; a unique opportunity for a Muricidae specialist or collector of giant sized shells; and a definite ‘wow factor’ seashell. Size: 80.6 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Off Taylor Island, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 19 m; dived; 2004. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
