Item | # 0002542024 | Family | Conidae | Name | Conus anemone peronianus - RAREST YELLOW GIANT , Iredale, 1931 |
Size | 83.2 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Of all the colour forms of this endemic South Australian species, YELLOW is by far the rarest. Typical colours are within the brown spectrum, (often with a touch of lavender); next in rarity are pink-peach; rarer still are rich red-orange; with rarity culminating in LEMON. The current specimen is the LARGEST yellow example I have ever seen. Invariably with numerous lines upon account of its ultra-fine shell and rough habitat, especially in examples of such advanced size and age. Completely natural, ultra-fine outer apertural lip. The subspecies is now obtainable only from choice old collections, and almost never in yellow at this size. A yellow giant peronianus will be lacking in virtually every specialised Conidae collection. Size: 83.2 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Thorny Passage, Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon limestone reef substrate, under slab, amongst coarse sand/gravel; 28 m; dived; 1995. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
