Item | # 0002501639 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila marginata marginata - OUTSTANDING / RARE , Gaskoin, 1849 |
Size | 53.6 mm |
Locality | Rottnest Island, W.A. |
Note | OUTSTANDING.....DEEP WATER MARGINATA MARGINATA.....RARE......A species more often than not confused with marginata f. consueta. Dainty birds-egg speckling over an immaculate pale dorsum. Dusty-pink lower margins. Super cute. Taken in deeper water, the species was originally described by Gaskoin,1849 (consueta later described by Biraghi,1993). This rarer species tends to be more ovula and petite with a higher dorsum than it’s squat cousin consueta. Typically always heavier and this one is no exception. Base more convex and very appealing. The crowning point is the malleation to the dorsum, a much desired feature, and attractive, but also announcing ultra-maturity. I cannot fault this outstanding example of the rarer marginata marginata and one for the finest collection. Grade: Gem. Provenance: from my own collection. Diver collected in 32m in reef caves amongst sponges; 2009; Rottnest Island, Western Australia. |
