Item | # 0002441231 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Ranella australasia - D-W W. AUST. COLOUR FORM , Perry, 1811 |
Size | 79.9 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | By far the rarest form of Ranella australasia, very seldom offered upon the world market, and little known, even to Ranellidae specialists. The form comes from very deep-water, from the western region of the Great Australian Bight, and differs from all more easterly examples in possessing a much finer and more lightweight shell, (remarkably so for the species). Coming from the clean white sand of this region, the shells are perfectly clean, with none of the encrustation, nor erosion typical of more easterly specimens. Apex always lost during development. Very few examples of this far western form were collected during the now long gone days of Great Australian Bight availability. An opportunity for the Ranellidae specialist to acquire this rare, deep-water western form. Size: 79.9 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Great Australian Bight, off Eucla, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 140-150 m; 1999. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
