Item | # 0002441227 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Charonia lampas rubicunda powelli - SUPERB , Cotton, 1957 |
Size | 132 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Originally described as a full species by Cotton, (who rightly recognised its difference to New South Wales specimens, exhibiting broader shells), all Australian lampas are now classified as rubicunda, although, given a decided morphological difference between intertidal NSW specimens and those occurring throughout the southern coast, I think it useful to retain the distinction of 'powelli' as a form or varietal name. Definitely one of the finest specimens I have ever handled of this variety. Beautiful colours: tan maculations, with rich pink-peach early whorls, and cinnamon accents to outer apertural lip and columellar shield. Size: 132 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Off Cape Bridgewater, Portland, Victoria, Australia; upon sand/reef/rubble substrate; 30-50 m; craypot; 1992. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
