Item | # 0002441224 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Sassia sexcostata - SUPERB , (Tate, 1888) |
Size | 20.9 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A superb specimen of this diminutive, endemic South-Eastern Australian species. The far more common Sassia verrucosa is very often misidentified as sexcostata, but the latter may be separated from the former by its finer, jewel-like sculpture; higher, more attenuated spire; and striking bluish black early whorls. Fully mature, with thickened outer apertural lip exhibiting columella denticles. For the Ranellidae specialist whose collection yet lacks a BEST of the best specimen of this elusive species. Size: 20.9 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off Kingston SE, Lacepede Bay, South Australia, Australia; upon reef substrate, under slab at extreme seasonal low tide; 1982. |
