Item | # 0002436297 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Umbilia armeniaca diprotodon - ULTRA-RARE; EXTINCT , Lorenz & Beals, 2013 |
Size | 107.6 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An ultra-large REPRESENTATIVE specimen of this ultra-rare and now legendary form. Better known as armeniaca brunnea, the specimen is dead-collected, yet retains much colour and pattern, and I offer it here to facilitate the acquisition of a quality representative specimen for an Umbilia or Cypraeidae specialist as yet to acquire an exceedingly expensive live-collected example. The species is generally accepted to be extinct in shallower water, whence the current specimen comes. Rare examples from deeper water were trawled in the past, but, with this activity also now terminated, no fresh specimens will ever be available again. Size: 107.6 mm (length). Grading: F. Data: Off Thorny Passage, Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon limestone reef substrate, under slab, amongst coarse sand/gravel; 28 m; dived; 1995. |
