Note | An exceedingly rare and outstanding ULTRA-GIANT specimen of the South Australian form. Very few specimens exceed 90 mm, let alone with such exquisite quality and proportions. The South Australian form, (the most beautiful incarnation of the species), is more delicate than that of Victoria or Tasmania. Often inhabiting a rock reef substrate, under ledges and slabs, most specimens incur severe damage to the varices, especially at such giant size. The current specimen, by contrast, was collected from amongst a bed of Pinna shells, which no doubt explains the exceptional level of preservation of its delicate varices. Collected forty years ago, and re-cleaned by myself for this auction, removing the very last traces of encrustation, the specimen appears as fresh as the day it was collected. Now obtainable only from choice old collections, and very seldom at this giant size and quality. Definitely for the Muricidae specialist, or collector of giant sized, 'wow factor' seashells. Size: 91.6 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Off Taylor Island, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 19 m; dived; 2011. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
