Item | # 0002435794 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila friendi thersites - UNIQUE SIR J BANKS GIANT , Gaskoin, 1849 |
Size | 91.6 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A UNIQUE and highly important specimen of the much sought after, and now extremely difficult to obtain GIANT Sir Joseph Banks Group form. The ONLY specimen I have ever seen exhibiting the ultra-attenuated, rostrate terminals, both anteriorly and posteriorly, (the posterior terminal being markedly recurved), which lend it the elongated appearance of the nominate subspecies, (and a resemblance in form to Umbilia). Ultra-rich colour and superb pattern. Exemplary quality for this usually very rough form. Hypermature, with great weight to size ratio. A truly incredible shell 'in the hand'. The specimen also comes from a rare locality within the Sir Joseph Banks Group - the only specimen I have ever handled from Lusby Island. Fresh specimens from this locality are no longer available, and are now obtainable only from choice old collections. A Sir Joseph Banks Group thersites like no other. For the advanced Zoila specialist. Size: 91.6 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Lusby Island, Sir Joseph Banks Group, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon brown sand/gravel substrate, amongst sponges; 24 m; dived; 1998. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
