| Note | A very large and richly coloured specimen of the 'philippina' form - the most beautiful incarnation of the species. The specimen is of the true/original 'philippina' form, as outlined by Raybaudi, exhibiting the graceful proportions; finer shell; and rich colour, in a palette of deep tan and chestnut, with margins of rich creamy yellow, which distinguish it from the more readily available China Sea form. A few small coral cave irregularities to dorsum, but overall a highly attractive specimen. Well-formed dorsal pattern of a highly aesthetic design. NOTE: I can now accurately state that Cypraea hirasei varies considerably within Philippine waters, with certain specimens resembling China Sea examples, quite different in appearance to the original 'philippina' form. I initially suspected that China Sea specimens had been imported into the Philippines for re-sale as locally collected examples, (and this may occur), but my recent exposure to live-collected specimens, with the animal intact, prove that the species is very variable within the Philippine archipelago, and that the true/original 'philippina' form remains rather rare. Size: 43.9 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Bohol Sea, of Silinog, Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines; upon sand/mud/rubble substrate; 200-300 m; trawled; 2020. |
