NameAmoria exoptanda - ULTRA-RARE ROXBY IS FORM , Reeve, 1849
Size110.3 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteHaving sold via shellauction the two examples I possessed of the ultra-rare and supremely beautiful Roxby Island form of this endemic southern Australian species, (the most beautiful and least known incarnation of the species), I have been fortunate enough as to have recently acquired one further superb specimen from an old collection. The form is characterised principally by its ultra-rich colour, and ultra-dense pattern, in conjunction with enormous size. So few specimens of this magnificent form were found, that it remains unknown to many of even the most advanced Volutidae collectors, (although the form should now be a little better known, upon account of my recent shellauction offerings). It inhabits an exceedingly restricted area off the East-North-East coast of Roxby Island, itself a tiny island in the Sir Joseph Banks Group. According to Peter Clarkson, (author of ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’), (pers. comm.), the area in which this form was found measured only ten to fifteen square metres. The region whence this form comes is now protected under the Sir Joseph Banks Group Marine Park, and no fresh specimens will be available in future. A world away from typical Port Lincoln examples. One further opportunity for an advanced Volutidae specialist to acquire this ultra-rare form. Size: 110.3 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off East-North-East coast of Roxby Island, Sir Joseph Banks Group, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon brown sand/gravel substrate, amongst rubble; 9 m; dived; 1999.
