Item | # 0002435780 | Family | Pleurotomariidae | Name | Pleurotomaria westralis - NEW OFFICIAL WRS , Whitehead, 1987 |
Size | 129.3 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Just touching 130 mm, this unbelievable GIANT, (unquestionably the BEST giant specimen I have ever seen), exceeds the current official World Record Size by around 2 mm, (information verified at wrs-shells.com on 10 September 2020). Collected during the legendary 1980s trawls off the atolls of Rowley Shoals, off the north-western Australian coast, and not available from this locality since, the current specimen is of exemplary quality for such advanced size and age, and for a delicate, deep-water trawled shell. Hypermature, with considerable solidity for a Pleurotomaria. Ultra-clean, with no encrustation. Completely natural outer apertural lip, with no artificial smoothing - very important for the connoisseur. Retention of massive original operculum. A monumental 'museum piece' of conchology. Size: 129.3 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Off Rowley Shoals, Western Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 300-500 m; trawled; 1983. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
