Item | # 0002372411 | Family | Fasciolariidae | Name | Fusinus australis - RARE D-W GIANT FORM , Quoy & Gaimard, 1833 |
Size | 114.1 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An ultra-large specimen of a rare deep-water form of this endemic southern Australian species, which definitely warrants a form or varietal name. Very few specimens of this form are known in comparison with typical intertidal and shallower water examples, as it appears to inhabit a restricted off-shore region, (a rare locality), which was fished in limited fashion in the past, with fresh examples being no longer avaiable. It is quite distinct from typical intertidal specimens, its two principal and obvious differences being its far paler colour, (peach and ivory), and the internodal accents of caramel. It also exhibits somewhat more angular whorls, and pronounced peripheral nodes. This is the ONLY specimen I have ever handled of this rare deep-water form. Exemplary quality for such advanced size and age in a deep-water trawled shell, with perfect, fully mature outer apertural lip. Trawl fraying to siphonal canal. To my knowledge, this rare form has never been previously offered upon the world market. Definitely for the Fasciolariidae specialist. Size: 114.1 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Evans Island, Nuyts Archipelago, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 50-60 m; trawled; 1995. |
