Item | # 0002340431 | Family | Conidae | Name | Conus peli - GIANT , Moolenbeek, R.G., 1996 |
Size | 89.6 mm |
Locality | Oman |
Note | One of the most famous Conus, which is almost never found in collections. Therefore, there is so much speculation around this species. The mollusc lives on the eastern coast of Masirah at a depth of 50-60 meters. It doesn’t sound scary, but in Oman there is a ban on trawl fishing, so all the specimens found on the beach after a strong storms. Another feature of this species is the almost instantaneous fading of the color, which makes the shell pale/pink. This specimen was found after the cyclone Kyarr, in December 2019. Dark color and has a gloss characteristic of this species (perhaps these are remnants of periostracum). The lip has a few notches, but I did not file it. For specialists. |
