NameEnixotrophon carduelis - RARE WESTERN FORM , (Watson, 1882)
Size59.6 mm, w/o
LocalityAustralia
NoteThe most beautiful specimen of the rarest Western Australian form I have ever seen. When this particular specimen was collected in extreme deep-water off Esperance, it was a major discovery, representing a significant western range extension for the species. The principal aspect in which this form differs from all examples from more easterly localities, is its atypical and exceedingly beautiful colour: ultra-rich creamy ivory, (as opposed to typical chalky white). It also differs in exhibiting NONE of the encrustation, substrate inclusions, nor erosion of easterly examples, having come from the cleaner, whiter sand substrate of the West, (as opposed to muddier substrates farther East). Retention of original operculum, itself in an exceptional state of preservation, (important for the Muricidae specialist interested in comparative work). I know of no other specimen of this rare, extreme western form which has ever been offered upon the world market, as the few known examples remain tightly held within important Australian colections. An exceedingly rare opportunity for the advanced Muricidae specialist. Size: 59.6 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Great Australian Bight, off Esperance, Western Australia, Australia; 400-500 m; trawled; 2004. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
