NameHaliotis laevigata - INCREDIBLE 213 mm GIANT , Donovan, 1808
Size213 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteThis incredible GIANT, the LARGEST I have ever handled, is of exceptional quality for such advanced size and age. Rarely seen at this monumental size, the Port Lincoln form of laevigata is generally collected in 10-20 m of water, although this superb giant was collected at the greater depth of 30 m by renowned diver Peter Clarkson, (author of 'Australia's Spectacular Cowries'). Clarkson was a professional abalone diver, and collected innumerable laevigata for commercial purposes, from which he selected the very BEST examples to retain as specimen stock. Clarkson painstakingly cleaned each of these to reveal the full beauty of the shell exterior: rays of salmon and pale green. No original Clarkson label accompanies the specimen, as I acquired over 20 specimens from Clarkson, with one label serving all. Virtually perfect outer apertural lip, with nothing but the most minimal restricted smoothing. Magnificent opalescent interior. Definitely for the Haliotidae specialist seeking a first-rate giant of the Port Lincoln form. Size: c.213 mm (longest dimension). Grading: F++++. Data: Thorny Passage, Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon reef substrate; 30 m; dived; 1994. Provenance: 1. Peter Clarkson private collection, Port Lincoln; 2. JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
