Note | For the South Australian form, (which never attains the length of the more elongate Western Australian form), the current specimen is MASSIVE - the LARGEST specimen of the South Australian form I have ever seen. South Australian examples are characterised by broader form, greater solidity, and reduced spines. Always with erosion and truncated apex at a size even approaching that of the current specimen. The most outstanding aspect of the specimen having attainined such old age and monumental size, is the ultra-dense deposition of shell material upon the columellar and outer apertural lip, both of which are ultra-thickened, to a degree rarely seen even upon typical fully mature individuals, with the usual porcellaneous white of the nacre having been transmuted to ivory in the process. Incredible weight to size ratio. Pale orange, peach, ivory and white. If there was a World Record Size entry specifically for the South Australian form, this would be it. An unrepeatable 'museum piece' of conchology for the collector of giant-sized shells. Size: 131.3 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Thorny Passage, Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon granite reef substrate, amongst coarse sand/gravel; 6-10 m; dived; 1994. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
