Note | Few can deny the universal beauty of sea urchins – their symmetry, outstanding colour schemes and sculptural detail are unparalleled in the natural world. However, only in recent years have they ascended from being niche collectibles, or simply ornaments, to items of scientific interest and collectibility in the broader community. Their rise in popular publishing, social media, and recently also as their own category here on Shellauction all attest to this.
Sea urchins differ from shells in some key areas; virtually every species exhibits two vastly different manifestations of their morphology – with spines, and as a denuded test. Both require a significant amount of preparation to secure their longevity as collectibles, and to present them at their most beautiful.
The items we offer here this month all follow a strict preparation protocol to adhere to these criteria.
This specimen is one of the most exceptional representatives of this species I have ever seen. Exhibiting truly remarkable colouration pattern, and in exceptional condition.
