Item | # 0002273289 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Charonia lampas rubicunda euclia - BIG; SUPERB , Hedley, 1914 |
Size | 163.5 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Proposed only as a variety, euclia was applied by Hedley to slender specimens from the far western end of the species range. The current specimen exhibits the salient features of this form, quoted here from Hedley's original description: 'stronger wrinkles on the arch of the inner lip ... transverse folds on the base of the columella near the canal ... more slender, especially as regards the spire ... '. Interestingly, all of the specimens I have seen of this far western variety have exhibited a pale palette, yet Hedley makes no reference to colour as a distinguishing factor of his variety. High overall quality for this usually very rough species, with only minimal loss at siphonal canal. For the Ranellidae specialist. Size: 163.5 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Continental Shelf, Great Australian Bight, off Eucla, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand/rubble substrate; 150-200 m; 1994. |
