Item | # 0002273287 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Charonia lampas rubicunda powell - OUTSTANDING , Cotton, 1957 |
Size | 161.7 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Originally described as a full species by Cotton, (who rightly recognised its difference to New South Wales specimens, exhibiting finer, broader shells), all Australian lampas are now classified as rubicunda, although, given a decided morphological difference between intertidal NSW specimens and those occurring throughout the southern coast, I think it useful to retain the distinction of 'powelli' as a form or varietal name. Definitely one of the finest specimens I have ever handled of this variety. Large size. Spectacular, ultra-rich colours: chestnut maculations; distinct orangish background hue; pinkish early whorls; cinnamon columellar shield. Rare perfection of outer apertural lip, siphonal canal, and highly glossy columellar shield. Definitely for the Ranellidae specialist. Size: 161.7 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Off Western coast of Wedge Island, Gambier Islands, Spencer Gulf, South Australia, Australia; upon reef substrate, amongst sand rubble; 50-70 m; craypot; 2000. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
