Item | # 0002273283 | Family | Fasciolariidae | Name | Dolicholatirus smithi - RARE; DARK FORM , Snyder, 2000 |
Size | 45.6 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Previously known as Dolicholatirus angustus (Smith, E.A., 1884), this very rare and little known Australian endemic species was recently renamed by Snyder for reasons of taxonomic legality. Rich caramel, with chocolate at the termination of the siphonal canal, and cream embryonic whorls. Ultra-clean, with no encrustation. There are a couple of predatory marks, (often found in reef-dwelling Latirus), completely hidden upon the ventrum, (image available upon request), and the above images convey its best presentation angles. Despite these marks, this is a very rare species, of which I have handled only three examples in my career. Mammillate protoconch intact. Definitely for the Fasciolariidae specialist. Size: 45.6 mm (length). Grading: F+. Data: Cooktown, Queensland, Australia; upon sand/coral rubble/detritus substrate amongst reef; 2-4 m; dived; 1988. |
