Item | # 0002198408 | Family | OTHER | Name | Pleioptygma helenae - RARE; SUPERB , (Radwin & Bibbey, 1972) |
Size | 73.9 mm |
Locality | Nicaragua |
Note | Originally described as a member of the Mitridae, (although also considered to have affinities with Volutidae), it was subsequently determined to be the only known living member of the otherwise extinct family Pleioptygmatiidae. Such specimens were somewhat available for a few years during deep-water lobster trapping off central America in the early 1990s, but have not been collected since, and are now available only from choice old collections. Usually dead-collected in poor condition, the current specimen exhibits exemplary, live-collected colour and pattern, and only one restricted disruption towards the anterior, and the typical, minimal loss at the apex. Size: 73.9 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off South End, Great Corn Island, Islas del Maiz, Nicaragua; upon mud/sand/rubble substrate; 15-20 m; lobster trapped; 1992. |
