Note | SPECIAL SALE - PART 8: Part eight of my current special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. CYMBIOLACCA COMPLEXA: My private collection contained three exceptional GIANT complexa, of which this is the last, (the other two having been sold in recent auctions). This particular example has always been my favourite, not only upon account of its size and quality, but for its atypical and beautiful pattern: a myriad of dark chestnut dots across an atypically pale ground. Of all Cymbiolacca species, complexa are renowned as being the most difficult to obtain at large size in superior condition. Uusually with heavy growth damage and other flaws, the current specimen has nothing but a few micro irregularities. Perfect, thickened, fully mature outer apertural lip. Collected during the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls, and now obtainable only from old collections. Size: 96.7 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Cape Moreton, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-120 m; trawled; 1981. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
